Don't Forget To Sing When We Win
Why Leaders Need to Celebrate More (Even the Small Stuff)
Quick question - when was the last time you actually celebrated a win? Not just a quick thumbs up in a Zoom meeting or a "nice work" dropped in Slack. I mean truly celebrated?
I'm asking because this gem of a reminder caught my ear while watching the latest season of Welcome to Wrexham: "Don't forget to sing when you win."
We're not singing. We're not even humming. We're sprinting from one milestone to the next, from one deliverable to another, like there's a prize for skipping the celebration. Spoiler alert: There's not.
Leaders often wear efficiency like a badge of honor. We're conditioned to "solve, ship, and move on" - rarely pausing to high-five ourselves or our teams. We think we're being humble, but sometimes we're just skipping the fuel that keeps our teams engaged, motivated, and human.
Why Celebrating Wins Matters:
It reinforces what right looks like. When we pause to celebrate, we're anchoring successful behaviors.
It energizes teams. Celebration is a dopamine hit. It tells people, "You matter. This matters."
It strengthens resilience. When challenges pile up (and they always do), those little celebrations are what help teams push through.
How to "Sing" as a Leader:
Make it a ritual. Start meetings with wins. End projects with reflections and celebrations.
Tailor the tune. Some people love public shout-outs. Others prefer a quiet thank-you. Know your team's rhythm.
Leadership Call to Action:
This week, find one win, just one, and sing about it. Loudly. Publicly. Joyfully. Let your team see you cheer. Let them see you pause. Let them feel the moment.
